Platio Press Release - Dec, 2017
Fuel your EV with solar energy harvested by the pavement
Eco-friendly cars are now fueled with possibly the cleanest energy generated by Platio Solar Pavers installed at one of the facilities of Prologis in Hungary.
The paving elements, which total 4.7 square meters, are built into the sidewalk near Prologis Park Budapest-Harbor’s electric car charging station. In sunlight, the 720 Wp system provides the station with green energy; when the station is empty, the energy supplies a nearby office building.
The developers of Platio wanted to demonstrate that by turning energy absorbing paved areas into huge walkable solar arrays, energy production can be achieved at a large scale without taking up useful space or altering the cityscape.
With this pilot project, Platio founders provide a more environmentally conscious way to fuel electric vehicles. “As e-mobility rapidly emerges, the demand for more energy will grow soon as well. Local, independent renewable energy sources can supplement or even decentralize the utility grid” – said Miklós Ilyés, co-founder of Platio.

Unlike similar projects aiming to harvest solar energy on roads, Platio is designed to be installed at pedestrian paved areas, such as sidewalks and squares. The company's vision is a future, where solar power plants are integrated intro the urban environment. The Solar Paver was introduced in 2017 with a 80 square meters system at the entrance of a shopping mall as a pilot, which was followed by a solar marine pontoon and a smart bench project.
The concept appealed to Prologis, the global leader in logistics real estate, and the company provided platform for the pilot project at one of its Hungarian parks, Prologis Park Budapest-Harbor. “At Prologis, sustainability is central to what we do—more than that, it is part of our organisational DNA. We implement numerous green solutions already in our logistics buildings and with an eye on further innovation we dedicate special care to trialling potential future technologies like this renewable energy source from Platio” - said László Kemenes, senior vice president and country manager, Prologis Hungary.
Platio LLC is a Budapest-based company designing smart landscape elements. Their first product is the Platio Solar Paver: walkable solar module equipped on modular designed bottom framing made of recycled plastic. Platio Solar Pavers can be installed at paved areas of outdoor devices or buildings to feed them with clean energy. The company manufactures, installs and monitors the systems.
Prologis, Inc. is the global leader in logistics real estate with a focus on high-barrier, high-growth markets. As of September 30, 2017, the company owned or had investments in, on a wholly owned basis or through co-investment ventures, properties and development projects expected to total approximately 687 million square feet (64 million square meters) in 19 countries. Prologis leases modern distribution facilities to a diverse base of approximately 5,200 customers across two major categories: business-to-business and retail/online fulfillment.
