Platio Press Release - Dec, 2017
Fuel your EV with solar energy harvested by the pavement
By integrating Platio Solar Pavers at the area of an electric car charging station, eco-friendly cars at Prologis’ facility are now fueled with more clean energy.
The solar paving system’s size is 4,7 square meters and it’s performance is 720 Wp. With this pilot project, the developers of Platio wanted to demonstrate that by turning energy absorbing paved areas into huge walkable solar arrays, a higher scale of renewable energy production can be achieved than in case of regular solar solutions usually limited by size, and thus environment conscious consumers can increase the rate of green energy fueled into electric vehicles.
This concept appealed to multinational logistics real estate company, Prologis, and provided platform for the pilot project. With the help of Platio’s innovation, service vehicles at one of Prologis’ facilities in Budapest are now fueled with electricity coming from Platio Solar Pavers.
According to Eurostat data, the share of renewables in the energy mix is 13% in the EU, which can be increased by local energy producing solutions such as Platio Solar Pavers – says Miklós Ilyés, co-founder of Platio. “As e-mobility rapidly emerges, the demand for more charging stations will grow soon as well, however energy industry experts are concerned that utility grid infrastructure developments will not be able to keep up with the growing number of such devices on the streets. Local renewable energy sources are not only eco-friendly solutions, but they can supplement or even decentralize utilities. By integrating Platio Solar Pavers into sidewalks or squares with access to sunlight, we can provide full off-grid operation for EV chargers or other outdoor devices without taking up useful space or altering the cityscape” – he added.
Three other pilot projects were installed by the company this year. In May a 80 m2 system was built at the entrance of a shopping mall in Astana, Kazakhstan for the EXPO 2017 showcasing future energy solutions. After that, a marine pontoon in Gothenburg, Sweden and a smart bench in Budapest was equipped with the walkable solar modules of Platio to provide power at green areas. The developers plan to launch the product at the European market in 2018.
About the company: Platio LLC is a Budapest-based company designing smart landscape elements. Their first product is the Platio Solar Paver: walkable solar module equipped on modular designed bottom framing made of recycled plastic. Platio Solar Pavers can be installed at paved areas of outdoor devices or buildings to feed them with clean energy. The company manufactures, installs and monitors the systems.
